[Also in Division D1] Rigid fibre-reinforced articles are made by subjecting a fibrous mass comprising at least some fibres coated with a thermoplastic material of a lower melting point than the fibres, to pressure and a temperature between the melting points of the coating and fibres so that substantially all the air is expelled from between the fibres and the coating flows to form a continuous matrix enclosing the fibres. The fibres may be continuous or staple fibres. The fibrous mass may contain fibres formed of the coating material. The fibres or the coating may be made from polypropylene, polethylene, vinyl chloride polymers, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile polymers, or nylon, or the fibres may be mineral fibres e.g. glass, asbestos, metal or carbon or drawn sheath/core synthetic fibres. The fibrous mass may be formed by carding, air laying or paper-making techniques, or it may be a sheet of side-by-side warp threads. The fibrous mass can be lightly bonded by heating to lightly sinter the fibres together, or by needling. The heating may be conducted by heated pressure rolls or a heated press which may be flat or shaped. A plurality of layers of fibres can be stacked between chromium-plated glazing plates during the hot pressing.</p> |
