1,261,338. Treating polyethylene. HERMANN BERSTORFF MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. 6 April, 1970 [16 April, 1969], No. 16181/70. Heading C3P. A melt of high pressure polyethylene is homogenized by feeding the melt from the polymerization to a single worm extruder and fully homogenizing the melt by shear energy. The extruder may have a heat-exchange area relative to output of at least 1À5 sq. m./metric ton/hour. The treatment may be controlled by regulating the speed of the extruder worm and temperature of the melt in accordance with samples tapped from the end of the extruder. Conventional additives, e.g. lubricants, stabilizers and colorants, may be added to the melt in the extruder. The products are said to have improved optical properties, e.g. for the production of sheeting, bottles and laminates. |
