A needle thread wiping device comprises a guide 62 supporting a thread wiper 38 operable by means 23 (a rotary solenoid as described) through a linkage comprising a crank 30 connected to the wiper by a link 32, the arrangement being such that when the means 23 is de-energised, to withdraw the wiper and trap the thread wiped, the linkage is in an overcentre position. The wiper, as a result, cannot be inadvertantly drawn towards the needle by needle thread which has not been severed. The guide is supported on a presser bar bushing 50 by clamp blocks 51, 52, 58 and the operating means is secured to the machine frame by a bracket 21. A stop (90, Fig. 4 not shown,) defining the overcentre position may be provided on bracket 21, alternatively the block 35 connecting wiper and link may be provided with a stop (100, Fig. 5 not shown) to achieve this result. The device may be associated with the thread cutter described in Specifications 1,179,964 and 1,179,965 the operation of the operating means controlled by the arrangement disclosed in Specification 1,179,965. |
