A pile fabric, e.g. hook and loop fastening material, is made by encapsulating a sheet of threads in low melting point metal, corrugating the sheet removing part of the metal to expose parts of the threads and then removing the remainder of the metal to leave the threads attached to the backing as upstanding loops. When being encapsulated in the metal the threads may also be shogged sideways before corrugating to produce fabric whose pile loops are shagged sideways. Referring to Fig. 2 threads 12 from a beam 10 in a refrigerated compartment A pass through grooved rollers 14 to a metal extruding die 17 with thread guide plates which are reciprocated axially of the beam 10 to produce a sheet of metal encapsulating the threads (Fig. 8, not shown). The sheet is then conducted through a chilling trough 20 and a tempering trough 22 from which it is drawn and corrugated by rolls 24 to produce a sheet with "open" corrugations (Fig. 10, not shown). The sheet is then fed through die plates 144, 146 to rollers 28 which run at a lower peripheral speed than the rollers 24 so that the corrugations are compressed together (Fig. 11, not shown). The sheet then passes onto a conveyor 30 where hot gas from nozzles 34 melts the top surface of the sheet and the molten metal is sucked away by pipes 36 to expose the loops of threads (Fig. 12, not shown). A backing is then applied from a roll 38 and adheres to the exposed loops of the encapsulate (Fig. 13, not shown). The laminate then passes around a refrigerated roll 50 which cools the backing whilst nozzles 52 blow hot gas onto the laminate to remove the remainder of the metal. The whole equipment is enclosed in a container filled with inert gas. |
