1,214,243. Chucks. ERICKSON TOOL CO. 2 April, 1969 [26 Nov., 1968], No. 17381/69. Heading B3B. A chuck for holding a tool holding member 6 having a flange 8 with driving slots therein, comprises a holder 2 having a tapered bore 3 for receiving a tapered shank of tool holding member 6, and a pair of keys 4 for engaging in the driving slots of the flange 8. A nut assembly 1 screws on to the holder 2 for clamping and ejecting the member 6. The assembly comprises a nut 10 and a ring 12 which is frictionally retained within the nut so that initial rotation of the nut rotates the ring also until one of a pair of inner lugs 19 on the ring 12 engages one of the keys 4. The ring 12 also has outer lugs 20 which clamp the flange 8 when the nut 10 is fully tightened by only a part-turn. When the nut 10 is rotated to its release position the ring 12 is moved outwards so that the lugs 19 eject the member 6. When the nut 10 is in its release position the lugs 20 are aligned with the keys 4 to enable the member 6 and its flange 8 to enter the holder 2. Rotation of the nut 10 initially rotates the ring 12 to move the lugs 20 to overlie the flange 8 to clamp it. The periphery of the nut 10 has a number of holes 16 in which a stop screw (18), (Fig. 2, not shown), is screwed for engagement with the ring 12. By adjusting the circumferential position of the stop screw 18 the clamping and releasing limits of the chuck are varied. One of the holes 16 may include a bright or coloured head screw for indicating the orientation of the keys 4 to facilitate fitting the member 6 into the chuck. The tool holding member 6 may itself include a collet chuck for holding a tool (T), (Fig. 1, not shown). |
