A building includes a foundation consisting of a bed 13 of granular material, e.g. sand or gravel, and a floor 12 in heat conducting contact with the bed. A heated liquid or gas may be circulated through pipes 15 within the bed or electric heating cables, energized at off-peak times, may be embedded in the bed. Air may be circulated between the bed, or a heat exchanger within the bed, and the interior of the building, and fresh air may be supplied to the building via the bed. The bed may serve to filter the air and may be moistened to humidify the air. |
