The invention comprises water-insoluble monoazo dyes of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is nitro. or. alkylsulphonyl; R<SP>2</SP> is H, Cl, Br, CN, nitro or alkylsulphonyl; R<SP>3</SP> is H, Cl or Br ; R<SP>4</SP> is H, Cl, alkyl or alkoxy; R<SP>5</SP> is H, methoxy or ethoxy; and R<SP>6</SP> is an alkyl group. Preferably alkylene is C 2 H 4 and the alkyl groups of the alkylsulphonyl groups, the alkyl and alkoxy groups of R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> have 1 to 4 carbon atoms. They are prepared by diazotization and coupling. The dyes give red, scarlet, orange, brown and violet shades in polyesters and cellulose di- and triacetates.
