<p>Flow of water which accidentally penetrates into a cable is suppressed. The free spaces between the elements are partly filled with a material which, on contact with water, forms a sealing barrier. The material has great thickening power and forms aqs. solutions whose visocisty increases exponentially with concentration, and is at least 200 cP at 20 degrees C and 2% concentration. The gel so formed block water flow from the penetration point. Preferably the product is a powder, such as methyl- carboxymethyl- or hydroxyethyl cellulose of a high degree of polymerisation.</p> |
