Epipodophyllotoxin benzylidene-beta-d-glucoside

(A) Epipodophyllotoxin benzylidene-beta-D-glucoside (I) of the formula:- (B) The starting material (III) (see 'Preparation'). (C) Process for the manufacture of starting material (II) (see 'Preparation'). In vitro, (I) has powerful cytostatic activity on mastocytoma cells and on fibroblast cultures; it also acts powerfully against experimental tumours, particularly leukaemia L-1210 of mice. It is useful for the therapy of pathological cell-multiplication processes (e.g. malignant neoplasms); dosage = 1-50 mg./day.
