Charge comprising hydrocarbons boiling in the range 5 -200 degrees C (esp. 5C and/or 6C hydrocarbons) and contg. paraffins and less than 50% by wt naphthenes (I) is contacted with catalyst comprising a metal suitable for hydrogenation incorporated with a mordenite zeolite (deficient in alkali metal cations) at 275-400 degrees C, 100-2000 psi, an hourly space velocity of 1-30 and molar ratio hydrogen/hydrocarbons 0.1/1. to 15/1 such that I is converted into paraffins without substantial cracking (i.e. no more than 10% by wt paraffins are cracked into 1-4C hydrocarbons); products can subsequently be subjected to isomerisation at temp. below 204 degrees C utilising isomerisation cat. for paraffins in the presence of H2.
|
