<p>An aqueous solution containing (+)-ribonate and (+)-arabonate anions is treated with iron powder, hydroxide, FeSO4 or ferrous oxalate; the solution is filtered, concentrated and crystallised to obtain ferrous (+)-ribonate, opt. in the presence of a lower alcohol or acetone, the ferrous salt may be used as a nutritional aid, or is decomposed with acid, (H2SO4, H3PO4 or oxalic acid), to yield (+)-ribonic acid which is converted to the lactone. The product is a valuable intermediate for vitamin B2 and ribonucleotides.</p> |
