The application relates to high-quality audio transmission through a network, e.g. using a higher level audio protocol such as Voice over IP. Normal telephone conversations which are provided by the telephone network experience a low audio bandwidth of approximately 3.1 kHz, This problem is solved in that an audio device (1110,1120,1130) is coupled to the network (1300) by a gateway (1210,1220). The gateway negotiates with the network in order to select a particular bandwidth from the network. Subsequently, an audio codec appropriate for the selected audio bandwidth is selected. Audio codecs comprise variable and constant bit rate codecs and codecs corresponding to standards such as MPEG, Dolby, THX, APT etc. |
