1,230,483. Detergent laundry bars and their production. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 1 Aug., 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 36819/68. Heading C5D. A process for the production of smooth detergent laundry bars which are free from a gritty feel during use in washing, which contain an organic synthetic detergent and builder salt and in which the ratio of the weight of builder salt to detergent is at least 0À5 : 1 which comprises forming a fluid uniform aqueous mixture containing water and detergent, and mixing therewith builder salt in particulate form while maintaining the plasticity during mixing to disperse the builder salt finely, inhibit crystal size and form a mixture which in bar form has a microcrystalline matrix substantially free of builder salt crystals over 40 microns in diameter. The organic synthetic detergents mentioned are alkylbenzene sulphonates in which the alkyl group has 8 to 16 carbon atoms, alkenyl sulphonates, hydroxyalkane sulphonate, alkane sulphonate, alkyl esters of alpha-sulphofatty acids and alkyl sulphates. Builder salts mentioned are sodium tripolyphosphate, trimetaphosphate and pyrophosphate, sodium carbonate and bicarbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium sulphate and chloride. Sodium silicate or starch may be added to the aqueous mixture prior to the addition of the builder salt. Other conventional ingredients which may be added are sodium salts of nitrilotriacetic acid or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, borax, sesquicarbonates, perfumes, whitening agents, e.g. titanium dioxide, optical brighteners and fillers. |
