A display apparatus 1 comprises a detection circuit 2 for detecting and extracting additional information inputted with a digital image signal 6a, 6b. The extra, non image signal data is then used to perform contour correction 10 on the digital image signal, sharpening the image displayed. The added correction information may be frame encoding information added to frames of the image signal. The amount of contour correction may be varied, for example correcting detected P or B picture frames more than an I frame (Figure 3), and a noise reducing unit my be included (Figure 5); noise reduction may be based on image bit rate (Figure 6). Alternatively, both frame encoding information and bit rate information may be used in improving image quality. Also disclosed is a digital television receiver that converts a received image signal from an interlace type to progressive scan type (Figure 10); this may use motion vector information (Figure 12). |
