1,242,832. Rechargeable metal-air battery. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 Jan., 1970 [11 Feb., 1969], No. 720/70. Heading H1B. A rechargeable metal-air-battery comprises a plurality of series-connected cells, each comprising two spaced catalysed gas electrode walls 2 containing hydrophobic membrane 3, e.g. a P.T.F.E. sheet, air compartments 8 for supplying air to the gas electrodes, rechargeable metal electrodes 4 disposed between the gas electrodes and wrapped in hydrophilic separators 5, and an auxiliary recharging electrode 6 disposed between the metal electrodes and compartments 7 containing electrolyte e.g. KOH. The metal electrode may be composed of Fe, Zn, Ni, Cd or In, and preferably comprises a flat sheet of porous bonded metallic fibres of Ni wool or Ni-plated steel wool impregnated with the active material. The air electrode may comprise a sheet of porous P.T.F.E.-bonded carbon impregnated with active catalytic material such as Pt, Ag, Ni, Pd, Mn and oxides of Co, Cr, Ni, Fe or Mn, or mixtures thereof. The auxiliary recharging electrodes may be goldplated nickel nets or more preferably they have a base member and a plurality of spaced nickel members extending vertically therefrom. |
