[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of formula and their functional derivatives (including, e.g. salts, esters and amides), wherein P is H or a substituent other than OY; Q, R, T are each H or a substituent, at least one of Q, R, T being OY where Y is hydroxyalkyl, or carboxyalkyl, or is alkyl or aralkyl in which (i) 1 or more CH 2 has been replaced by O, S or C : O, and (ii) OH or CO 2 H are optionally present, or is an O-heterocyclic ring which may be OH- or alkyl-substituted, or alkyl carrying a heterocyclic ring which may be OH- or alkylsubstituted; and R 1 is H, or (possibly substituted) C 1-10 alkyl, C 1-10 alkoxy or aryl. The OY group may be introduced either before or after formation of the chromone ring, which is effected by known procedures, e.g. by cyclization of appropriately nuclear-substituted ethyl (2 - hydroxybenzoyl)pyruvate and (2-hydroxybenzoyl)propynoic acid. Details are provided for the preparation of 2-hydroxy-5-ethoxyethoxy-, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - hydroxypropoxy -, 2 - hydroxy- 4 - carboxymethoxy - and 2 - hydroxy - 5 - carboxymethoxy-acetophenones.
