In a centripetal extruder, essentially as described in Specification 1,041,627, provision is made for the escape of gases evolved during the plasticization of plastics, by having in housing 1 a vent 9 situated ahead of feed throat 2 relative to the direction of rotation of the rotor. Vent 9 is divided into parts 7 defined by plates 8, the area of the parts being variable by movement of plates 8 on shafts 10 by means of a tie rod 11. Parts 7 are closed at start-up. Enclosing vent 9 is a hood 12 having an air port 14 and an exhaust port 13. Plastics specifically mentioned are polymethylmethacrylate and P.V.C.
