Provided is a catalyst for partial oxidation of methylbenzenes comprising the compound represented by the following formula 1 and, optionally, a fire-resistant inorganic support: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>WO<SUB>x</SUB> (1) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> where W stands for a tungsten atom, O stands for an oxygen atom and x is a number determined by the oxidation state of W. Also provided is a method for producing aromatic aldehydes from partial oxidation of methylbenzenes in gas phase using molecular oxygen using the afore-mentioned catalyst. The catalyst of the present invention can be prepared easily compared with conventional multi-component oxide catalysts. And, aromatic aldehydes can be produced from methylbenzenes with high selectivity and yield.
