1318753 Operating hinged members XEROX CORP 24 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 45567/70 Heading E2M [Also in Division G2] A support 10, e.g. for an original in a photo copying machine, is provided with a platen shield 23 the closure of which is controlled by first and second biassing means, there being a predetermined inclination of the shield to the support such that, if the shield is raised above this inclination, the first biassing means acts to maintain the shield in position, while if the shield is raised to a position below the predetermined inclination, the second biassing means overrides the first to return the shield to its fully closed position. Raising the shield 23 causes a crank arm 19 to rotate, thereby moving a slide 31 to the left (as seen) in a carriage 30, while a flange 40 of the slide moves in a fixed housing 41 thereby stretching a compression spring 47 which forms the first biassing means. This spring acts to hold the slide 31 and shield 23 in a stationary condition regardless of the position of the shield. Similarly lowering the shield 23 moves the slide 31 to the right. The second biassing means comprises a spring 59 acting on a plate 55 to move the latter upwards. Normally this movement is prevented by the slide 31, but when the slide is positioned corresponding to a shield position below the predetermined inclination, the plate 55 moves into an opening 50 and the pressure of the spring 59 causes the slide 31 to move to the right thereby lowering the shield 23. |
