In a method and an arrangement for power allocation in a telecommunication system based on the water-filling principle, transmission power is allocated to a plurality of links or channels based at least on the mutual information expression for digital modulation. According to one aspect, the power is allocated based on a power constraint, and according to another aspect the power is allocated based on an information constraint or requirement.
