[PROBLEMS] To provide a method, which allows the preparation of a porous carbon nitride material having a desired nitrogen content with ease and also can set a C/N value precisely over a wide range. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A method for preparing a porous carbon nitride material (MCN), which comprises a step of mixing a porous silica material, a nitrogen source and a carbon source, a step of heating the mixture obtained in the mixing step and a step of removing the porous silica material from a reaction product obtained in the heating step, wherein the heating step comprises a step of converting the mixture to a polymeric material at a first temperature and a step of carbonizing the mixture at a second temperature being higher than the first temperature.
