The silencer comprises a sleeve-like attachment (24) for fitting the silencer (10) on a pipe (14) as well as a silencer housing (16) which defines a flow path (28) leading to an opening region of the pipe. The housing is pot shaped to surround the attachment section. A spiral flow path can be defined between the attachment section and silencer housing and is open to the pipe in the region of the housing base and to the atmosphere in the end remote from the housing base.
