The downloading of software from a network e.g. a server 550 to mobile terminals 520 can utilise valuable resources, particularly if the files are large. In this invention, the download takes place over a shared channel e.g. the PDCCH of a GPRS network. Where several different types of files are being downloaded to different terminals, or groups of terminals, the files are fragmented e.g. by packetising and multiplexed to ensure optimum transfer. The multiplexing may adjust the transmission time of each different file, according to priority. Alternatively the number of times each file is transmitted may be adjusted. The prioritisation may take into account, the revenue generation capacity of the files, the essential nature of the files, e.g. operating software may be given priority, size of the files, or number of recipients. The download may be protected by encryption utilising a public key. |
