Through transmission laser welded electro optical subassembly and lens

An electro-optical subassembly (100) includes a base (20) supporting at least one lead 10 and a lens unit (50) having a lens 52. The lead 10 supports an electro-optical component. The lens unit (50) is through transmission laser welded to the base (20) such that the lens is aligned with the electro-optical component. Through transmission laser welding may be used to join the base 20, a cylinder 40 and the lens unit 50. The electrooptical component may be an edge emitting laser 30 and a PIN monitor 32. Lens 52 may be aspherical. The base 20 and cylinder 40 may be made of liquid crystalline polymer.
