The device has a tensioning roller that interacts with the drive belt on a pivotable tensioner arm joined to an end section of a damped torsion rod spring joined to the engine at the other end via a housing. The device is mounted on an engine side wall via an elongated housing with minimal dimensions and the spring is formed essentially according to the length of the housing, whereby a separate damper is arranged between the housing and spring.
