Modular field unit for automation technology has a main module, suitable for signal generation and or signal processing and a number of signal inputs and outputs. The signal IOs are connected to exchangeable modules (D1-N, D1'-N') that have connections for external signals, with the modules having electrical limiting means for the external signals to serve as barriers according to a predefined explosion protection type.
