Instruments (90) and methods for inserting an intervertebral implant (210). Insertion of the implant (210) is accomplished by grasping the implant (210) between the arms (1, 2) of an insertion instrument (90) having arms (91A, 91B), which separate from each other and close against each other onto the implant (210), such that the ends of the arms (91A, 91B) of the insertion instrument engage recess (214, 217) of the implant (210). A spacer (60) may be provided between the arms (1, 2) of the insertion instrument (90) to help position the implant (210) while held by the arms.
