A method to determine a replacement value for a failed sensor in a vehicle seat occupancy sensing system includes sensing the output of each sensor in a sensor array of the vehicle seat passenger detection system 204, classifying a sensor as inoperative if specific requirements are met 212, calculating an equivalent sensor output value for a sensor classified inoperative 214, applying the sensor output values of operative sensors and the equivalent sensor output values for inoperative sensors to a neural net 216, and determining seat occupancy 218. A sensor is classified as inoperative if its output falls below a predetermined value 206, exceeds a predetermined value 208 or remains fixed 210. The equivalent value is determined by taking a weighted average of the outputs of the sensors neighbouring the inoperative sensor. The sensors may be Hall effect sensors measuring the load on the seat. The vehicle operator may be alerted to the failure of a sensor in the array. |
