<p>Hydroxypyridone derivatives in azo dye coupling components 6-Hydroxy-pyrid-2-one cpds. (I) (where R1 is H or -CONH2; R is alkyl, (chloro- or nitro-)-phenyl, toluyl, xylyl or anisyl; and Z is H, (phenyl)alkyl, toluyl, xylyl, (chloro- or nitro-)phenyl) are prepared in good yield and purity by acid hydrolysis of a cpd. (I) where R1 is -CN (I'). Pref. cpds. are those where R is CH3, R1 is -CONH2, Z is alkyl, specif. (m)ethyl or n-propyl, useful in production of brilliant green-yellow reactive dyes. Pref. hydrolysis takes place in H2SO4, more pref. at 50-60 degrees C in 94-97% H2SO4 if R1 is to be -CONH2; or at 100 degreed C in 70-95% H2SO4 if R1 is to be H.</p> |
