1,177,536. Hoses. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 1 May, 1967 [30 Aug., 1966], No. 19966/67. Heading F2P. [Also in Division B3] A method of making a reinforced elastomer, e.g. rubber, hose comprises the steps of forming a tubular core 11 by helically winding in overlapping relationship a laminated tape 12, composed of an open mesh fabric 13 sandwiched between uncured elastomer layers 14 and 15, on a mandrel 40, helically winding a plurality of wires 17 to form a first cylindrical wire ply on the core, covering the wire ply with an elastomer skin 18, helically winding a plurality of wires 20 on said skin to form a second cylindrical wire ply, the first and second plies being wound on opposite hands so as to cross one another, and subsequently vulcanizing the built-up hose. The tape is wound on an axiallymoving mandrel from a rotating winding head 42, Fig. 2 (not shown), mounting a tape storage reel 41 which is angularly-adjustable thereon. Further rotating winding heads 51 and 55 apply the wire plies, the individual wires of which are tensioned and given a helical set or curl by a nosepiece 65 threaded into a winding boss 62 carried by said heads, Fig. 6 (not shown). The layer of elastomer 18 is applied to the first wire ply by rollers 53 and 54 disposed axially between the wire-winding heads. A final elastomer ply 27 completes the hose. A nylon, tape may be wrapped around the hose prior to heating the hose assembly to vulcanize the same. The wire plies are wound at a helix angle of 54‹44<SP>1</SP>Œ1‹. The laminated tape forming the tubular hose core is made by applying an uncured oil-resistant elastomer 33 and an uncured elastomer 30 to an open-mesh fabric 13 by two pairs of calendaring rollers 34, 35 and 31, 32, Fig. 3 (not shown). The wire plies are formed of high strength steel wire which may be brassplated. |
