PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backrest structure of a chair, smartly designed with a small ratio of a frame body to the outside appearance of the chair, permitting firm stretching of the upholstery over the frame body, weight reduction, reduction of the number of parts, and improvement of the assemblability. SOLUTION: In the stretching structure of the upholstery 18 of the seat 14, etc. of the chair with the upholstery 18 stretched over the surface of the frame body 17, engagement holes 25 piercing in the front/rear direction are formed in front and rear frame rods 20 facing each other in the frame body 17, and hem materials 29 with a locking pawl 29b at the end are fixed to front and rear rims of the upholstery 18. The upholstery 18 is wound from the front surface to the rear surface of the front and rear frame rods 20 via the outer side faces, and the hem material 29 are fitted to the engagement holes 25 from the rear side and the locking pawls 29b are locked to the inner rims of the engagement holes 25 on the front surface of the front/rear frame rods 20.
