Disclosed is an antioxidant which is a reaction product of a transition metal compound and an aromatic compound. This antioxidant has a structure wherein a transition metal atom and an aromatic ring are bonded via a sulfur atom, oxygen atom or nitrogen atom constituting the aromatic ring and/or a substituent thereof. When compared with conventional antioxidants such as ZDTP and MoDTC, this antioxidant is extremely excellent in antioxidizing properties as well as resistance to NOx and high-temperature cleaning properties. Consequently, a lubricant can be provided with excellent long drain properties by containing such an antioxidant.
