<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor element of which measured-gas-side lead section has high durability, and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: The gas sensor element 1 has a tabular solid electrolyte 11 of oxygen ion conductivity, and a measured-gas-side electrode 121 and reference-gas-side electrode that are disposed on one surface and the other surface at the tip of the solid electrolyte 11. In the gas sensor element 1, the surface of the solid electrolyte 11 is provided with the measured-gas-side lead section 122 for electrically connecting a measured-gas-side terminal 123 disposed at the base end of the solid electrolyte 11 to the measured-gas-side electrode 121. In the gas sensor element 1, the region exposed to the measured gas is provided with an insulation protective layer 14 for covering the measured-gas-side lead section 122.
