<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of realizing a projection state in which contrast is emphasized and a projection state where brightness is emphasized. <P>SOLUTION: The projection type display device is equipped with a light source, a reflector, an illumination optical system, a polarizing beam splitter, a reflection type liquid crystal display element and a projection lens, and projects a picture formed by the reflection type liquid crystal display element to a surface to be projected.
