PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize an image which is recorded on a recording medium attachable to and detachable from a data reproducing apparatus, in a menu picture when reproducing the recording medium in the data reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: In a data recording and reproducing apparatus 1, if a temporary stop key in a remote controller 60 is operated while reproducing data of a certain title of a DVD 100, a still image at that time point is displayed in an output unit 200. If predetermined operation is further performed on the remote controller 60 in such a state, data of the relevant image are copied to an HDD 31. In processing to create a menu screen of the DVD 100, the data of the image copied into the HDD 31 are utilized, as data of a background image of the certain title, based on the operation performed during the reproduction of the certain title as mentioned above.
