1,240,268. Bearings. R. C. CLERK. 24 July, 1968 [25 July, 1967], No. 34341/67. Heading F2A. A flywheel 1 is supported on a shaft 2 which has at its lower end a cup which surrounds a stub shaft 6, the shaft 2 being supported by a washer 11 abutting the lower end of the cup, the washer being supported on a fluid film. Fluid is supplied to a chamber 14 below the washer by a screw pump 13. After the flywheel starts to rotate, the flywheel may be harnessed to drive a pump which supplies lubricant to the fluid film. The upper surface of the washer 11 may be coated (e.g. with P.T.F.E.) so that while the flywheel is slowing down, and there is insufficient energy to provide the necessary lubrication for the fluid film, the shaft may rotate on the washer. A ball bearing 8 may be provided to journal the shaft 2 about the stub shaft 6. A duplex spring 9 is provided to load the bearing axially. Alternatively a plain bearing may be used. Lubricant may be supplied to the journal bearing by means of screw pump 15. |
