PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To back-up contents important for a user. SOLUTION: A recording medium 39 records a preference value of the contents and state information of the recording medium 39. A content selection part 62 selects prescribed contents by using the preference value recorded in the recording medium 39. When a state check part 63 judges from a recording state of the recording medium 39 that more detailed check is needed, it has a sector check part 64 check the recording medium 39 in full scale. The sector check 64 holds information on an error sector and decides whether or not the contents recorded there need to be backed up. The backup processing part 65 performs back-up processing of the contents which are judged to need the back-up by the sector check part 64. The current invention is applicable to a personal computer.
