[Also in Division A4] A mechanism for providing two different periodic output motions, one a reciprocating motion, and the other an oscillating motion, from a rotary input comprises a cam 40 having three different cam regions 72, 73 and 80, the cam being adapted to be moved axially in order that cam portion 72 be engaged by one set of cam follower elements a, a<SP>1</SP> on a follower member 11 to produce oscillating motion of the member 11, or, alternatively, that cam portion 80 be engaged by another set of cam follower elements b, b<SP>1</SP> on the follower member 11 to produce reciprocating motion of the member 11. The cam 40 has an integral screw-threaded portion 45 which engages a complementary threaded opening 51 in the hub 44 of a face gear 46, the cam 40 and gear 46 being mounted on a steel pin 47. A reversible electric motor 20 has an output shaft 24 carrying a pinion 38 which meshes the gear 46. Rotation of the motor shaft 24 in one direction causes any necessary axial movement of cam 40 to the position for oscillating motion and then rotation of the cam 40 and gear 46 together to provide the oscillating motion. Similarly, rotation of the motor 20 in the opposite direction produces the reciprocating motion. The mechanism is applied to an electric toothbrush, the end 12 of output shaft 11 being adapted to receive a brush attachment. A casing 13 houses a rechargeable battery 15 and a recharging component 16 which is accepted in a stand.
