PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a pumping loss and provide a proper engine brake effect by finely controlling a valve opening period for an intake valve in a prescribed operating state in which fuel cut is performed. SOLUTION: This valve gear controller of an internal combustion engine comprises a CPU 11. The CPU 11 sets a valve opening duty Dout according to operating state parameters detected by an operating parameter sensor 9. When the sensor detects a prescribed deceleration state of the internal combustion engine (YES in step 14), the supply of a fuel into the internal combustion engine is cut off, and the valve opening duty Dout is corrected in a reducing direction for utilizing an energy obtained by reducing the pumping loss in the charging of a battery 401 by a power generating part 400 (steps 15, 20, 22).
