PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knock controller of an internal combustion engine capable of accurately detecting knocking even if the internal engine comprises a variable valve mechanism. SOLUTION: This controller is applied to the internal combustion engine having the variable valve mechanism for varying the opening/closing timings of engine valves. A knock determination level VKD is increased or decreased according to the magnitude of the output of a knock sensor (knock intensity LVPK) at a knock determination gate, and knocking is determined based on the ratio of the knock intensity LVPK to the knock determination level VKD at the knock determination gate. When a timing at which the seating noise of engine valves occurs invades from the outside to the inside of the knock determination gate, the degree of increase/decrease of the knock determination level VKD is temporarily increased more than that when the timing does not invade.
