PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve controllability of the cooling water temperature, by heightening the target cooling water temperature without reducing knocking resistant performance of an engine, in a cooling system for controlling the cooling water temperature of the engine at the target cooling water temperature. SOLUTION: This cooling system has cooling water circulating passages 11 and 12 for circulating cooling water of the engine 1, a radiator 13 arranged in the cooling water circulating passages 11 and 12, and a flow control valve 16 for adjusting a cooling water flow rate passing through the radiator 13. An electronic control device ECU 30 controls the flow control valve 16 so that the cooling water temperature TO of the engine 1 becomes the target cooling water temperature Tt. Here, the ECU 30 sets the target cooling water temperature Tt in response to the intake temperature THIA, and actually, sets the target cooling water temperature Tt to the relatively high temperature when the intake temperature THIA is relatively low, and sets the target cooling water temperature Tt to the relatively low temperature when the intake temperature THIA is relatively high.
