PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer latex for paper coating, excellent in coating operability and giving paper excellent in printability such as surface strength, blister resistance, print gloss and stiffness. SOLUTION: The method for producing the copolymer latex for paper coating comprises polymerizing 10-95 pts. wt. monomers (B) in the presence of 5-90 pts. wt. copolymer (A), wherein a copolymer (A) is obtained by polymerizing (a) 35-95 wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene-based monomer, (b) 5-50 wt.% vinyl cyanide monomer, (c) 0-2 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and (d) 0-60 wt.% other vinyl monomer copolymerizable with the monomers (a), (b) and (c) [wherein, (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)=100 wt.%] and the monomers (B) comprise (a) 10-60 wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene-based monomer, (c) 0.5-30 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and (e) 10-89.5 wt.% other monomers copolymerizable with the monomers (a) and (c) [wherein, (a)+(c)+(e)=100 wt.%].
