PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus 1 for transporting a rod-shaped article 2 of a tobacco processing industry in a transverse axial direction, having such a structure that the apparatus 1 is equipped with at least one of grooved transport device 10 having troughs 11 for the articles 2, a width of each of the troughs 11 is larger than a diameter of the article 2, and the troughs 11 have each at least one air intake perforation 12 operable by negative pressure 17 in one position inside the trough 11 for the purpose of holding the article 2 by utilizing the negative pressure 17, and to provide a method for transporting the same. SOLUTION: The apparatus 1 is equipped with cover devices 19, 20 for the purpose of forming a chamber 30 by cooperating with one of the troughs 11, wherein second air intake perforations 14, 12 especially traveling ahead of or behind the article 2 in the axial direction transverse to a direction of transporting the article 2 are operable by the negative pressure 17 in the chamber 30.
