1,241,087. Vanadium suboxide. TEEG RESEARCH Inc. 17 Feb., 1969, No. 8393/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] A vanadium suboxide film is prepared by evaporating under reduced pressure either: (i) vanadium or a lower vanadium oxide than the vanadium suboxide, or (ii) a higher vanadium oxide than the vanadium suboxide, condensing the said vanadium or vanadium oxide as a film upon a substrate, and heating the substrate bearing the film under reduced pressure in the presence of either: (i) a higher vanadium oxide than the vanadium suboxide or (ii) a lower vanadium oxide than the vanadium suboxide, respectively. According to a preferred embodiment vanadium pentoxide is evaporated at a pressure of from 10<SP>-4</SP> mm. Hg to 10<SP>-6</SP> mm. Hg, and a temperature of from 500‹ to 850‹ C. and the thin film deposited upon a substrate, e.g. highly polished platinum, glass or quartz plate is heated at a pressure of from 10<SP>-1</SP> to 10<SP>-4</SP> mm. Hg at a temperature of from 400‹ to 600‹ C. to give a vanadium suboxide of the general formula VO x , wherein x is from 1.50 to 2À02. |
