摘要 <p>A system and method for supplying power to a peripheral device (200) where the voltage supplied by a host (275) device may be the voltage required for operation of the peripheral, or a higher voltage. A memory system (200) includes a voltage regulator (500, 600) including an input, and output and a bypass (P2, P3, P4, P5) shorting the input to the output. A voltage detector (550) communicates with the regulator (500, 600). A Bypass enable signal operable responsive to a signal generated by the host device indicating that the power up of the host is complete is coupled to the bypass element. A method for operating a voltage regulator (500, 600) in a memory system (200) includes the steps of: providing a voltage regulator (500, 600) having an input and an output, and including a bypass (P2, P3, P4, P5) shorting the input to the output; setting the bypass (P2, P3, P4, P5) to off prior to power up of a host device (275); responsive to a power up completion signal from a host device (275), determining the power supplied by the host (275); and if the power supplied by the host (275) is below a threshold operating voltage, enabling the bypass (P2, P3, P4, P5).</p>
