PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus which automatically detects an event for disturbing viewing of video audio data during video recording/reproduction of the video audio data of a television broadcast program, a movie or the like; stores a video recording/reproduction position of the video audio data at a detection point of time of the event; and automatically deletes information of the video recording/reproduction position. SOLUTION: In the case that a broadcast program recorded on an HDD 22 is being reproduced at a point of time when an external tone denoting the occurrence of a prescribed event is detected, a main control section 21 reads program identification number of contents in which a video part reproduced at detection of an external tone is recorded, from a magnetic disk in the HDD 22, reads an elapsed time denoting at which point of time from the start of reproduction the video part is reproduced, from a timer counter 23, stores the above information into a RAM 24, and a user directly reproduces the video part corresponding to the information by operating an operating section 19.
