PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a convenient remote communication technology requiring no special arrangement on the portable telephone side. SOLUTION: The remote communication system A comprises an STB1 installed in house, and a portable telephone 41 carried by a user. The portable telephone 41 has a telephone conversation function and a communication function. The STB1 has an antenna 3, a tuner 5, an interface circuit 25 for exchanging data with a telephone line. The portable telephone 41 and the STB1 can perform telephone conversation and communication through a telephone line. The interface circuit 25 imparts the STB1 with such functions as (1) to bring an STB system into telephone conversation mode, (2) to receive a command from the portable telephone 41, (3) to convert a received command into a code for associating with key operation of the portable telephone 41, (4) to send a TV program through a public line to the portable telephone by at least any one of voice and video image, and the like.
