PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure simply and with high accuracy wavelength chirp of a light modulated at a high speed, and to measure a wavelength chirp of modulated light having a wide band. SOLUTION: In this wavelength chirp monitoring device, a variable optical filter is used, having the first transmission wavelength band, wherein a differential coefficient, acquired by differentiating the transmittance of an electric field amplitude proportional to the square root of an optical power by an optical frequency is positive and becomes maximal, and the second transmission wavelength band wherein the transmittance of the electric field amplitude is the same as that in the first transmission wavelength band and the differential coefficient, acquired by differentiating the transmittance of the electric field amplitude by the optical frequency, has an absolute value approximately equal to that in the first transmission wavelength band and has a negative sign, and the transmission wavelength bands of the variable optical filter are changed, and the first and second transmission wavelength bands are made to agree successively with the wavelength band of the modulated light, and time waveforms of the modulated light that have passed are observed, respectively.
