1,241,425. Capping bottles etc.; sealed containers; container closing apparatus. SIDAPLAX S.A. 15 Sept., 1969 [28 Oct., 1968], No. 61058/68. Headings B8C and B8T. Apparatus for closuring a container 3 consists of an electrically heated vertically movable frame 9 which has a lower chamfered part 10 and ribs 11. A pressure plate 12 which is heated by conduction from frame 9 forces the closure material 28 which is biaxially oriented resin, against the container edges pushing down the overlapping parts of sheet 28 and heating them at their contact point with ribs 11, alternate parts of the edge thus becoming cockled and being forced under the container lip. A cold crimping sleeve 16 moves upwardly, thus crimping the " pushed-down " portions of sheet 28 against the container lip, Fig. 3 (not shown). This position is maintained, during which the heat of the plate 12 causes shrinkage of the central top portion of sheet 28. The frame 9 and plate 12 are then moved away and the shrinking stresses in the central portion of sheet 28 pull the crimped edge portions into engagement with the container lip, forming a downwardly extending skirt which may be used in opening the container by use of a finger-nail. If there is no such skirt, a " tear-strip " may alternatively be substituted. |
