In a suction cleaner comprising a motor 6 in a casing 5 driving a suction fan 7 and a carpet beater assembly 8 air is drawn by the fan 7 through a suction opening 16 past the beater assembly 8 and through a dirt receptacle 15 removably mounted in the casing 5, and a door 24 gives access to the heater assembly 8, which comprises a beater member 45 carrying bristles 46 and which is removably mounted in coupling devices mounted in bearings 48, 54 carried by the casing walls 20, 19. A spigot 47 at one end of the beater member 45 is received in a cup 52 and a shaft 50 rotatable in the bearing 48, the shaft 50 being retractable, by a manual knob 53 against the action of a spring 51, to release the member 45. Pins 60 at the opposite end of the member 45 engage in holes 59 in a resilient block 58 carried by a shaft 56 which projects through the bearing 54 and carries a driving pulley 10. |
